What’s in a Name?

I was recently asked about the etymology behind my characters’ names and it got me thinking… that’s a great topic for a blog post.

Gwendolen Queen of Boreal

Gwendolen Queen of Boreal

I named my newest doll, Gwendolen. Before she was named Gwendolen, I called her Freezia—which, now seems completely unoriginal. Back when I first imagined my Ice Queen I made up the name Freezia, because it sounded like a cool play on the word Freeze and Freesia (the flower). Well, once I got the doll and went public with her I realized that Freezia no longer fit the flow of my other dolls, or Shilon characters, so I went to the internet for inspiration.

And that’s where I nearly always start. The internet. Or sometimes baby name books.

When I’m trying to come up with a name for a character I usually search names that mean something that represents the character I’m writing. Gwendolen for example means “white ring.” I felt this was perfect for my Ice Queen, as it has a much broader meaning than frozen flower. Plus the name sounded better than Freezia.

I also research other languages. For Gwendolen, I was searching for the word “ice” in other languages. I also searched for “winter,” “snow,” and, “cold.” Luckily I didn’t really search that long in these categories as the baby name search proved better results.

Love, True Love

Equal Love

Equal Love

In Shilon it is a great taboo for one to marry outside their Clan. Though there are no written laws that forbid such unions, the fear of ostracization is so strong amongst the peoples of Shilon that it is impossible to imagine such a union exists. Granted there are those who remain Clanless.

Gossip surrounds those few who have no known Clan, rumors of scandalous unions producing impure offspring that could ruin the bloodlines of the Clans. These children are often bullied and abandoned by society or their parents.
The taboo is even harsher for those who are born to nobility. The desire to keep the Clans pure has caused much heartach, for love knowns no Clan. Many have fallen in love with peoples from other Clans, though they fear even confessing their feelings. Read the rest of this entry »

Lucky #7

I found a four-leaf clover in my back yard.

Lucky Clover

I’m really hoping it’s a sign of good luck. Due to recent events, I have found that certain things are beyond our control. No matter how hard we may work at something, there are times when the stars have to align just right in order for that door to open, and isn’t that sort of what luck is? But enough about that.

A new blog I recently found is StaceyOneale.com. In one of her posts she mentions The Lucky 7 Game.

The actual rules are:

  • Go to page 7 or 77 of your current manuscript.
  • Go down to the seventh line and copy the 7 sentences that follow.
  • Then, after pasting those, tag 7 authors.

I’ll skip the tagging part, however, if you are an author (or just like to write as a hobby) feel free to leave your response in the comments below. I would love to see what you’re working on.

Happy July!

Happy July Fireworks

Already halfway through 2012!

The year is already halfway through. It has been a very productive and busy year for me. I made it through the conventions and now have new items at my Etsy Shop. I am also in the process of wrapping up a new writing project and have finished the first full-length draft.

Looking back at the year thus far, I have to admit I am very proud of where I’ve come. There are some things I hoped would have made progress, and those disappointments do haunt me more than I would like to openly admit. However, I feel disappointment can open doors to new adventures. Let me explain… Read the rest of this entry »
