Hamburger Steak w/Onion Gravy

Hamburger Steak Dinner

Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy

Today I would like to present another wonderful recipe from Cooking With Dog.
I have made this recipe a couple times now, and fully enjoy the taste of the onion gravy. I recommend watching the video (provided in the link bellow) for step by step guidance.
Hamburger Steak!

Ingredients for Hamburg Steak: From Cooking with Dog
(serves 2)

– Fried Onion –
1 Onion (200g/7.05 oz) – 2/3 for hamburg meat mixture, 1/3 for onion sauce
1 tbsp Olive Oil

-Optional Side Dishes-
150g Broccoli (5.29 oz)
1 Steamed Potato (160g/5.64 oz)
1 tsp Olive Oil
1 Tomato

-Hamburger Steak-
250g Mixture of Ground Beef and Pork (8.82 oz) – beef : pork=7 : 3 [I just use regular lean hamburger]
1/3 tsp Salt
A pinch of Black Pepper
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
2/3 Fried Onion

15g Panko – Breadcrumbs (0.53 oz) [I found this at my local grocer]
2 tbsp Milk
1 Egg

– Onion Gravy –
1/3 Fried Onion
50ml Water (1.69 fl. oz)
1 1/2 tbsp Soy Sauce
1 tbsp Mirin
1 clove of Grated Garlic
10g Butter (0.353 oz)
** Removing the air from the meat mixture will prevent it from breaking into pieces while being cooked.

  • Chop the onion. Heat oil and fry onion 2-3 minutes on high heat. Stir-fry onion for 2-6 more minutes on medium heat until translucent.
  • Remove onion from heat and allow to cool on a plate (2/3 will be used in hamburger and 1/3 will be used for gravy)
  • Mix milk and Panko bread crumbs
  • Season meat and Kneed until gooey. Add 2/3 fried onion, bread crumbs and egg. Need until mixed well.
  • Divide meat into halves (I use a pound of hamburger and divide the mixture into quarters for smaller portions). Coat hands in oil and shape meat into balls, tossing from one hand to the next **
  • Fry meat in oil, flipping once bottom is brown. Add enough water to cover the bottom of pan, cover and cook until the water evaporates (approximately 20-30 minutes) until the juices from the meat run clear.
  • Remove meat from pan, do not drain pan!
  • Add measured water, soy, mirin, and onion to pan. Bring to a boil.
  • Add butter and minced garlic. Stir until the butter melts. Use a ladle to spoon gravy over hamburger meat.

This is one my favorite recipes from Cooking with Dog. I increase the vegetable sides and decrease the meat portions, extending this meal into 4 portions. For sides I like potatoes and broccoli as suggested, but I also have made it with peas, carrots, and other green veggies. It does take some time to make, about an hour, but it is worth it! The onion gravy is amazing. If you try this, let me know how it goes!
